Program
Housing Communities
Free recitals at affordable housing, transitional housing, and community centers — often the first live classical concert residents have ever attended.
What it looks like
For many residents of affordable and transitional housing communities, a live classical recital is something that happens “somewhere else” — in a concert hall they’ve never had reason to enter. This program brings the recital to the community room, the courtyard, or the lobby.
Performances are typically 45 minutes, in late afternoon or early evening so working residents and families can attend. We aim for the feel of a friendly neighborhood concert, not a formal recital.
What we play
We program for accessibility:
- Classical pieces with strong narrative arcs (a Bach prelude, a Chopin nocturne, a Vivaldi movement)
- Music from cultures represented in the community
- Pieces our musicians can briefly introduce — what to listen for, why they love it
We also leave space for questions and conversation afterward, especially with kids in the audience who may be curious about the instruments.
What we hope happens
The “in return” half of our name lives most strongly here. We hope kids see musicians not much older than themselves, and start to imagine what they might do. We hope adults see that music belongs to them too. And we hope, eventually, that some of the children in those rooms become the musicians who come back and play for the next community.
How to schedule
